Rare Duikers

  • DataDroid by DataDroid moderator

According to IUCN, Jentink's Duikers are more threatened than Zebra Duikers. However, there are more than twice as many clips tagged as #jentinks_duiker than as #zebra_duiker. While some measure of error could be chalked up to incorrect identification or not adding hashtags, the current results suggest that there are, in fact, more Jentink's Duikers than Zebra Duikers. Is one of the potential goals of this study to assign updated classifications to threatened species?

    HI DataDroid,

Hopefully people interested in duikers will want to look at this data and they can then evaluate this!

But it is important to remember that IUCN classifications rely on more than just numbers at a handful of sites. Distribution is important, as is population increase and decrease. So there may be more Jentink's at one or two of our sites but their overall distribution may be more limited, or their population may have recently dramatically decreased giving them a more threatened classification. Nevertheless, often these classifications are data deficient so this may indeed be a very valuable find!
