Dog at night or something else?

  • Snorticus by Snorticus

ACP00063cw This handsome beast shows up in this location on several nights with prey, looking off toward the background distance in an alert and worried way. It has a lovely bushy tail but normal sized ears. Is it just a domesticated dog or some other animal?

    just a dog?

ACP00063bv And seen in this clip with bigger prey in it's mouth - side view showing some horizontal markings.

I don't think it's a domestic dog. Side-striped jackal? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Side-striped_jackal Gorgeous animal, btw. Hope we see more!

I agree with @ksigler.. it's definitely not a domestic dog, and I am also thinking Canis adustus adustus, although I'm not a jackal expert. Great series!

Is it eating those insects? What are those things? They look like they're coming out of the termite(?) mound.

They may be flying termits but I can't tell from the video. But it seems to be eating them! 😃

They seem to be too big for termites to me, so I think they might be locusts as well. But I've never seen any termites IRL yet 😕

I see now on the clip, @Bohe has commented that they are flying termites. If that's the case, they sure make 'em big in Africa! 😄 In the U.S., they're the size of ants.

ACP00063cw Is it a side-striped jackal (Canis adustus) as ksigler says? I read here that their range is western & central Africa, this animal does have nice side stripes.
