Chimp & See Talk

Poachers using science papers (and other information)

  • AnLand by AnLand moderator

If you ever wondered why the research sites here at Chimp & See get a random name („Muddy Frost“, „Dry Lake“ etc.) without exact geographical locations disclosed, here is an interesting article in The Guardian describing that poachers not only use photos or videos with referenced location, but even articles from the scientific literature to get distribution information about the species they are "interested" in.

The article deals with newly discovered species, but other species of value (be it alive, as trophy, or as bushmeat) can be at risk even if researchers and conservationists intended quite the contrary.
