Exciting endangered duiker spottings?!
-
by DZM admin
Of all the duikers that we are asking Chimp & See volunteers to keep an eye out for, there are two that, as I understand it, are very rare: the zebra duiker and the Jentink's duiker. (I know they're rare because trying to find a licensable picture of either one for the field guide was a nightmare!)
Today, I'm fairly sure--but correct me if I'm wrong--BOTH were found at Cool Silence 5.
You can just make out this zebra duiker's hindquarters in ACP0002pya -- found by user @k-s :
And just an hour or so earlier, @Aqua_Fairy found this Jentink's at ACP0002dh1 and ACP0002dh2!
Now, I'm not on the science team, but as far as I can tell, these are our first spottings of duikers classified as Endangered and Vulnerable, respectively, by the IUCN. That, as far as I'm concerned, is pretty darn exciting! 😃

They are quite striking! I've noticed, site 1 had a lot of Yellow Backed Duikers(marked as Dark Duiker), and no Jentinks. Sites 5 and 6 we are seeing a lot of Jentinks, and very few Yellow Backed. They're similarly sized, like the same foods (I think), and are nocturnal. I bet they compete with each other quite a bit for territory where their ranges overlap.

Also, the text on the site is now finally fixed to say "Jentink's" and not "Jentik's," so that's good!

They get the coolest eyeshine, too. 😄

Eye shine comes from the tapetum lucidum - the layer on the inside of the eye that reflects ambient light, allowing for better vision in low light (night) situations. Nocturnal and crepuscular animals have the tapetum....other diurnal animals do not.
So cool.
