What is this? It looks like a small house cat but I am not sure if I am gauging the height correctly or if there are spots, perhaps I cannot see them because it is night?

It's a melanistic (black) African golden cat -- nice find! They're a bit larger than a house cat, but still classified as "small cat". Viewed in color they look like this:
