Telling the difference between different species of duiker.

  • KongKong by KongKong

I find it extremely difficult to tell different species of duiker apart. Some of them look the same , or the same as small antelope for that matter. So how do I tell them apart?

    Hi KongKong
The duikers are quite difficult, that's true, but once you get used to them a bit it gets's easier.
We had quite many discussions about duikers but first of all, you might look at the field guide provided with the green icon at lthe left of the video while classifying.

Then there is the cheat sheet for every site:

    Here for Aged-Violet

    and for Green-Snowflake

And you can search in the different duiker collections you'll find via Search.

Quick tip: Small grey duikers have no dark spots other than a dark area on the front of their faces and they constantly flap their tails up and down. All the red duikers we see have mostly some dark stripes or legs or fronts and move their tails sidewards.

The red duikers at Green-snowflake are all weyns_duiker.

Bushbucks on the other side are the most frequent small antelopes we see, also here at Greensnowflake. They have big, round ears and a darker shaded neck and face. In daylight you see some white markings, which are hard to make out at night/in artificial light.

Enjoy the duikers and all the other animals here!
