Why so few forest buffalo?

  • Batfan by Batfan

To say these are such large animals, I'm surprised they appear in so few clips. Is this because there just aren't many of them or is it perhaps because the cameras are located in habitat that they don't usually use?

That's a great question - There is certainly some overlap with chimp habitats and forest buffalo habitats! I am going to ask around 😃

    From Vittoria:

""Large herd size is associated with home ranges that contain substantial areas of open habitat, and thus more food resources than forested habitats. " ? "

So although we run into them in the forest, I guess they aren't hanging out a lot in the areas chimps favour (and thereby where our cameras are focused)
