Mangabey tool use?

  • Snorticus by Snorticus

Would this be #mangabey #tool_use as it looks to be roughing up the item so it will be easier to peel?

I think @MimiA posted a link to a paper about tool use in general that stated:

"To be classified as a tool, an object must be held in the hand, foot or mouth and used so as to enable the operator to attain an immediate goal."

So, I think that here is just an opportunity, not considered as tool use. I cannot find the discussion anymore, but the paper can be found at the MPI-EVA website: http://www.eva.mpg.de/primat/staff/boesch/pdf/fol_prim_tool_use_making.pdf

My reasoning is that he is using an external object - the tree - to facilitate peeling another external object rather than using his body - his teeth - to get inside the food item. This is not a method listed for chimps but fits the criteria bottom of pg. 223 in "The Chimpanzees of the Taï Forest: Behavioural Ecology and Evolution" discussion of tool use.

Hey guys. There is no singular definition of tool use but AnLand's criteria is more or less what we use. Snorticus you are correct that your definition is what has been used in the past but after extensive debate, what AnLand has posted is more or less what people accept now.
