Chimps using tools at the popular rock in Red Water 6

    #popular_rock #RW6 #chimps

There have been multiple chimps tagged in this spot, seems there is one or few tools they can use there

Here I think I have spotted one or two juveniles. My guess is it's two different ones. problem is most of the time they conveniently and quite deliberately hide behind the tree except here ACP00038v8 and ACP00038v6 (we see long hair, greyish fur, and it's a girl)

then ACP00038v9 ACP00038v5 but also ACP00038w7 ACP00038w8 ACP00038w9 (that one shows we have also a girl but I think it's the second one, darker fur, shorter hair)

on ACP00038w4 we can see her looking from behind the tree into the camera http://static.zooniverse.org/www.chimpandsee.org/subjects/5520359d69736d72e675de00/previews/5520359d69736d72e675de00_3.jpg and we can see the second one's hand on the other side of the tree (more grey fur) also here ACP00038w3 and here ACP00038w5 which is why I think we have two juveniles

there is one of them with her back to us here ACP00038wa, ACP00038wb, ACP00038wg and maybe it could be one of them in detailed face shot ACP00038wd

time proximity of ACP00038w6 bigass grey dude previously noted as cut ear guy could suggest they are possibly a family? all of this happens between 8:57 and 9:20 the same day if I'm not mistaken

I've started tagging videos of this spot with #popular_rock. There seem to be some interesting social dynamics going on. The chimps seem to be taking turns, with the juveniles only coming in once the guy with the cut ear (RWMale03) is finished.

Also the guy with the black face and the grey legs used the spot two days apart--- march 6th and 8th---at the same time of day (between 12 and 13), while the older RWMale03 uses it much earlier in the morning (albeit on the tenth, in the videos we've seen so far).

I like this idea! I've seen chimps at this site but there are, by my count, at least two juveniles, three adult males, and one infant. I bet if we collect all of them here we can get a better picture of how many there are, and hopefully catch each one on different days.

I've made a keyword collection so you can easily see all the videos you've tagged.

    Interesting clips:

ACP00038vj Surprise infant running right in front of the camera while the big male with the cut ear uses the rock.

ACP00038vm & ACP00038wd GREAT portraits of one of the female juveniles

Trying to ID the individuals we have so far...

ACP00038mu Large male with grey hind legs and back. Regular ears, squarish brow with a strong dip, thinning hair on his head but not really any bald spots, slightly grayish face.

ACP00038v4 Large male with a cut in his right ear. Rather rounded brow with a strong dip, some grey on the legs and back but not as much.

ACP00038vq Seen with a female with a dependent infant.

ACP00038vj Probably the same infant, brief closeup with the male in the background

And then we have these guys, one male, who looks to have no grey at all on his legs or back, a very dark face, with an infant and a juvenile female in company. I think the juvenile might be a match for the young chimp that's occasionally using the tools, I need to take a break from chimp videos though. 😃

Actually, I think this is a male. in the video http://talk.chimpandsee.org/#/subjects/ACP00038v8 you see a small penis (just as soon as he sit on the anvil). Moreover when he moves away (and you see the bottom, there is no swelling there).

    Thanks for the video!

Hi, I would say she is a female juvenile. This is because in video ACP00038vm you can see a very small swelling!

great video with a nice portrait!
