Chimp & See Talk

Ada and Ilo

  • jwmaritime by jwmaritime

They spend most of the video with their backs turned to camera, but the older one seems to be left handed when using the tool and is also holding a alternate stone in its left foot. Maybe those can be identifying traits?
The younger one does give us a good look at its face and has a slightly distinctive point on its right ear.

They hang around the camera for a little while, some nice face shots here!

ACP0002r9l The older juvenile has a grayish face, quite long and narrow.

ACP0002r9m Best shot of the young juvenile's face.

ACP0002r9n The young one is female and still young enough to get carried, mother has a very dark face, small dip in her brow.

    Hi jwmaritime,

adult chimpanzees, when performing complex manual tasks (e.g. the nut-cracking), are right-handed or left-handed (i.e. some always use the left hand, some always use the right hand) . Therefore, checking which hand they are using when lifting a hammer is definitively a good sign to consider for the individual identification . Of course, all of them can also use both hands to lift the hammer (when the hammer is too big), in this case we do not get much info about the identity of the individual. Different is the situation for the youngsters, since only at about 10 years of age, the individual achieves her/his adult handedness.

Unfortunately the video you spotted is not so informative regarding chimps identification, in that he juvenile who is cracking nuts is covered by the tree...try with another one!!

Possibly RW Female 02 and her youngest? Not sure...

Could it be that the chimp picking up the younger one is male? Or don't the males do that?

I'm asking because the posterior seems to be black. And we do have a dark-faced male with a brow-dimple and grey legs here: http://talk.chimpandsee.org/#/boards/BCP000000d/discussions/DCP00001fm

Lots of great shots of both female and juvenile.

The brow line of the female looks similar to that of RWFemale03, and the youth seems to have a similar "devil may care" attitude and ear shape as the one in video ACP0002r9n.

Seems to be similarities between that video and this one. Image ACP0002r9l

new #chimp ? and an infant. Unknown place so far. lots of grey hair already. Father or mother?

Pretty sure, it's the mother. Look at her nippels: ACP0003dz4 !

I also wonder if this are both RWFem07? We've only seen her in the night cameras, which I think are infrared, so the uniform white-gray of her head could match up with the balding patterns... She has a very angular face, almost triangular.

She has the bald head and the white hair on her legs and back. Small infant joins her. She looks like she is settling down to do some nut cracking so there are probably other videos in this same sequence.

Thanks for the merging. I was going to propose that in the next minute. Names: I vote for Ada. If the infant is a girl: Ilene.

  • PauDG by PauDG scientist, moderator

my bet is male (but i am not sure), but we can use a "neutral" name, just in case 😃

    Posted

  • AnLand by AnLand moderator

I do not have a good neutral idea. Robin? (In German names are always clearly male or female I think.)

In this video I think you can see tiny dangling bits on the juvenile so I think male may be correct. 😎

    Yes, I see. Boys ... Thanks, @vestigial

  • PauDG by PauDG scientist, moderator

jejejeje, no neutral names then...we need a male name! 😃

How about Ilo for the juvenile? It's close to Ilene. Supposed to mean joyous and the little guy seems pretty happy.
