Hi @Lauraklynn,
your juvenile has white spots on the face, and I am not totally sure that it´s a match. For the moment it is more important to find good videos and pictures where you can see clear traits than to find matches. And this is a very good one!. For the moment let´s call him/her MF7Juv11.
Thanks!!Posted

No problem. I know identifying individuals is difficult.

@NuriaM: I found some more videos from that scene and tagged them all with MFJuv01. I just discovered afterwards that you took the juvenile as two different ones. Shall I change it and where should I do the cut (as in time)? Not really better pictures than before. This might be the best:

Then there is also MFJuv05 in the middle of that same scene: ACP0004tcj (I guess it's better when you sort that out yourself.)

😉...it´s crazy, isn´t it?
juveniles are VERY difficult to match, especially when you can´t see the face clearly and the gender is so hard to determine (or impossible!).
In most of the cases, our only tool is the time stamp, and this is the criterion that I chose to name these guys. According to the time stamp, the sequence would be:- ACP0004tbz : the chimp comes and sits on a trunk (Juv02)
- ACP0004tbv : the chimp comes and sits on a trunk...there is a 6 minute difference between video 1 and 2, and many things can happen in 6 minutes, besides, you must take into account that it MIGHT be a large group with more juveniles coming and going.
- ACP0004tbw: the chimp is still on the trunk, and at the end of the video he/she leaves, and there is no time difference between video 2 and 3, so I assume that these two guys are the same one (Juv01)
- ACP0004tcd : the chimp is on the trunk and leaves (the chimp in the video before had already gone). There is a 1 minute time difference between video 3 and 4.
If we HAD to match all the chimps, I would take a risk and say that these guys are the same one (they have too very similar faces), but for the moment it is more important to create a list with nice pictures.
I will name your find (ACP0004tbd) Juv13 but still I will write that it might be a match to Juv01 and Juv02...would it be ok for you? This is being a brain storm!!
Thank you again.

Dug out the whole sequence! This is in order, with each block being a single 60 second recording, including only the videos that have a chimp in them. In this sequence we have Juv01, 02, 05 and 13. Or just one! I don't know yet, I haven't tried to match up the features shown in each short sequence, but having all the recordings separated out should help. S/he is rather restless!

Yes, of course and in that last video: ACP0004tca from @Quia 's collection you hear a second chimp using a hammer. So there are at least two of them around at this moment.

Hi guys...
hmmm...to me they all look the same!! they are actually too far away to say. But still here is what I decided to do (comments and opinions are very welcome!!)
I hashtagged these videos: ACP0004tc0, ACP0004tc1 and ACP0004tc2 as MF7Juv02 as this is a whole sequence and the juvenile is of course assumed to be the same one (unless he/she has developed a teleportation ability).
These two ones: ACP0004tc5 and ACP0004tc6 I consider that it´s a new one (I checked ACP0004tc3 and ACP0004tc4 hopping that it might be a Juv02 entire sequence, but they are empty 😭 ). But still his/her traits are not visible so I added them to the chimps list document. But not to the prospective chimps list.
I hashtagged ACP000tcb and ACP000tcc as MF7Juv13.
And this last sequence: ACP0004tc7, ACP0004tc8, ACP0004tc9 and ACP0004tca starts one minute after the last sequence (ACP0004tc6) is over...so I considered him/her a new one, but without visible traits we cannot add the videos to the prospective chimps list, but to the chimps list document.
Any suggestions?
I am sorry that we are now very strict with matching, but it is really risky to assure that two chimps are the same one with such a video quality and especially when they are so far away that we cannot see well the traits.
you are being very helpful 😉
Thank you!!!!

Agreed they look the same, but also that they're so far away that it'd be really hard to tell if there were differences! Though, she has a pretty impressive head of hair, I think it's her(?) most distinct feature in all of these. I've gathered up the best views from each of the 6 sequences, it should be helpful for trying to find a match in other videos.

Hi @Lauraklynn,
hmmm...these two guys look certainly very similar. But if you check this sequence:
ACP0003t3z : this video finnishes at 09:52:08 with the chimp leaving.
ACP0003t3e : and this one starts at 10:08:02
as you can see, it´s 16 minutes difference, and besides the chimp leaves. It means that another juvenile is very likely to come on the scene afterwards...their faces look slightly different to me too: the second chimp ( ACP0003t3e ) lacks some white spots on his/her face, don´t you think so?
I don´t know, maybe we could ask for more opinions...
Sorry I am so meticulous 😦 !!

I understand wanting to be meticulous. If they are the same, that's awesome, but I'm not offended if they aren't. I think #MF7juv01, #MF7juv02 and #MF7juv11 may all be the same individual, but I'm not confident enough to say for sure without more video.

There are still gaps in the footage and not all the videos contain chimps, but it appears the individual in ACP0003t3y and the one in ACP0003t39 both have the same mark/scar on their behinds (above and slightly left of center). Hoping this helps confirm them as the same individual.

I think they all have the same facial features including lots of dark hair and right body size. But I am biased, I already tagged them all as the same earlier by accident.

I don't know the best place to put this, so I figured I would start a new post. I found as many videos as I could from this location on 1/9/2014 and put them in order by time stamp (if anyone finds any more, let me know and I can add them). I also included the tags they are currently labeled with and if the individual leaves the camera during the clip. There are still a few gaps here and there so we can't be sure, but I think most if not all of these are the same individual, probably going to retrieve more nuts/food to crack open:

I haven't seen the full sequences for all these clips, but would definitely vote for Juv01 & Juv02 being the same. Juv11 & Juv13 - not sure about yet. To me, Juv13 looks different than the others. And the older clip with Juv11... I'm curious whether those facial lumps are just temporary, like insect bites, or if they are actual permanent facial features.

Well Friday came and went, so I thought I'd give this guy a name : )
If/when @lauraklynn comes back, I'd be more than happy to give her my next naming rights!First, I'd like to say that although I've put in quite a bit of time working on chimp IDs, I don't think I did anything like the majority of the work in this very complicated case. I think most of the credit should go to @lauraklynn, @NuriaM, @AnLand, @Quia, and @ksigler -- good work guys!
Second, although I am a moderator, I've been with Chimp and See for quite a bit less time than many of the others, and I still am excited to have the honor of naming a chimpanzee, so thank you!
Finally, as I think this young one is a boy (and I'm giving myself at least 50/50 odds on that 😛), I'd like to name him Link.

Should these three ( ACP0004tb3, ACP0004tb6, ACP0004tb7) be tagged Link as well? The first one starts just 15 seconds after the last video ID'd as Link, and the second one has him returning after being out of frame for about 45 seconds, but with the same dot on the bum upon returning. The third one is a bit more circumstantial as no traits are visible and a few minutes have passed....

I'd never heard of Lancelot Link, and while I do not approve of chimps in entertainment (see http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0022050 among other reasons), a kids' show from the Get Smart guys does sound fun and an appropriate source for a name 😃Posted
