Chimp & See Talk

Mother(s) with juvenile nutcracking

  • AnLand by AnLand moderator

The pair is sitting on the ground. Two more adult chimps briefly in the background. All hard to identify.

    ACP0003sz9
    ACP0003sza
    ACP0003szb

15 min later - probably other pair because of baby (last video in sequence): ACP0003szs, ACP0003szt (seems to be the adult?), ACP0003szv, ACP0003szy, ACP0003szz, ACP0003t00

    enter image description here

    ACP0003t02, ACP0003t04, ACP0003t05, ACP0003t07

Videos are quite burned, time stamp not always readable. So hard to tell, but the adult seems to stay around: ACP0003szw, ACP0003szx, ACP0003t01, ACP0003t03, ACP0003t06

The adult carrying a very young infant: ACP0003t08, the older young in some distance

I am not sure myself whether such posts / collections are really helpful ...

I added the first part of this post to another discussion as time frame there is tighter: http://talk.chimpandsee.org/#/boards/BCP000000j/discussions/DCP00004dl

Still, the date is hard to see, but this video seems to belong in that sequence: one juvenile, one adult on the ground feeding. An female adult is leaving with a young infant somehow in her hands (looks strange): ACP0003t17

Hmm...it´s a large collection. I decided to add a new juvenile (MF7Juv12) and a new male (MF7Male04). But I didn´t post all the videos...althogh they are VERY likely to be the same male, I posted only those MOST likely...but if we all agree, we can hashtag the other videos and add them to the official tag group for MF7Male04.

Here is MFMale04 a bit better to see: ACP0003t11 (with the juvenile, adult female with infant almost unvisible in the background)

And a big fight / agression (male against juvenile with mother intervening) here: ACP0003t12 and ACP0003t13
    Further: ACP0003t14, ACP0003t15, ACP0003t16, ACP0003t17

(There seems to be two other infant, at least one quite small, with the female in the background.)

Am I right that the juvenile is watching the male when it is taking the branch (his branch?) as if anticipating some kind of (negative) reaction?

I try to sort things out a bit:

    ACP0003szs 16:53 (juvenile with branch)

    ACP0003szv 16:53 (juvenile with branch)

ACP0003szy 16:54 (juvenile with branch, feeding, walking away)

    ACP0003t02 16:54 (juvenile walks away)

ACP0003t0w 17:03 (in background loud noise, not pleasant, I think)

ACP0003t0y 17:06 (both juvenile playing, female with infant in the background)

ACP0003t14 17:08 (male and juvenile, group of chimps in background)

ACP0003t15 17:08 (male and juvenile, group of chimps in background)

ACP0003t16 17:09 (male and juvenile, group of chimps in background)

ACP0003t17 17:09 (male and juvenile, group of chimps in background)

ACP0003t0z 17:11 (directly before agression, there is already tension)

    ACP0003t12 17:12 (aggression)

    ACP0003t13 17:12 (aggression)

ACP0003t0x 17:18 (male(?) close to the camera)

ACP0003szz 17:18 or 17:19 (male sitting, nutcracking, feeding)

ACP0003t07 17:20 (male sitting, feeding, nutcracking)

ACP0003szt 17:24 (male sitting, feeding, nutcracking)

ACP0003t00 17:24 (male sitting, feeding, nutcracking)

ACP0003t04 17:25 (male sitting, feeding, nutcracking)

    ACP0003t05 17:28(?) (male walks away)

ACP0003t08 17:32 (female with young infant, another chimp in the background)

I guess these are all videos I collected until now. There are quite a lot of missing minutes ...

The other scene at the same day, same place at 16:38 may or may not be related. Earlier discussion see here: http://talk.chimpandsee.org/#/boards/BCP000000j/discussions/DCP00004dl

    Good morning @AnLand,

    wow, you are hard worker!!

this list is very helpful. I added the new videos to the chimps video list document, specifying that this might be an entire video sequence of MF7Juv12/MF7Male04, and that it might be the same group.

    Thanks!!

I just realized that this video about MF7Juv15: ACP0003t0o belongs (timely) into my thread. It is 17:02, Dec. 21, 2013. Mine starts at 16:53 and goes (with quite some minutes missing) until 17:32. This video ACP0003t0w is 30 sec. later. Does not say anything about matching. But maybe we can keep that in mind. Here the picture from @Elifel `s original post.

So, at least that is not a totally single video anymore!

There are some more videos. I brought them in timely order, but did not integrate in my earlier list here (these are all video not covered in that earlier list):

ACP0003t0o 17:02 (juvenile walking, feeding; chimp using tool as hammer in the background)

ACP0003t0q 17:02 (juvenile sitting, using branch as hammer)

ACP0003t0t 17:03 (juvenile sitting, feeding; tool use by adult(?) in the background)

ACP0003t0p 17:05 (juvenile sitting, using branch as hammer, in background juvenile, adult and infant; other juvenile comes forward, climbs in the tree)

ACP0003t0r 17:05 (juvenile sitting, using branch as hammer; other juvenile disturbs him and wants to play(?))

ACP0003t0u 17:06 (two juvenile playing, one hanging from a tree)

    ACP0003t0v 17:13 everybody is gone

    ACP0003t0s 17:17(?) (adult male(?) walking)

(If you want I can integrate both lists, but I guess you are doing this in the spreadsheet.)

Timeline and description of these additional videos found by @parsfan

ACP0003t0b 17:06 (male sitting and tool use, juvenile and infant(?) in the background, leaving the scene)

ACP0003t0d 17:07 (male sitting and tool use, a juvenile in the background also using branch as a hammer)

ACP0003t0f 17:07 (male sitting and tool use, juvenile in the background, female carrying infant on back arriving in background, tool use by adult female)

Still missing videos in between all these sequences, but we're getting closer.

yes, I am adding them to the spreadsheet 😉

    @NuriaM

I have a question. I am watching the spreadsheet a bit to figure out how this works. The time in the spreadsheet (second column) is another than the time stamp in the video. Why? (It is in that sequence 2013-11-22 in the spreadsheet and 2013-12-21 in the video time stamp.)

  • NuriaM by NuriaM scientist, moderator

...yes, the thing is that the second column is auto-populated. We found some other cases too in other sites. I don´t really know why, maybe you could post your question in the technical support board?

While annotating one of the videos from this series I recognized that MF7Male04 appears to lack its right ear.

    Right side of his head:

Looks different, right? Pictures from this video: ACP0003t0f

Here a close-up from another video:

Did not recognize this before. It makes it very probable that the male in ACP0003t0x is the same. And at least we have a clear trait to look for.

(Boxy head, no baldness and appearance of injury (that round rest with a hole in the middle) suggest a closest match to #Achenar, but I am not sure. Video quality is quite bad and most scenes are in a distance.)

Ok, that is the best shot from the right side of the head of the male we actually tagged as MF7Male04. In my opinion, there is no right ear, which suggests that MF7Male04 has no right ear and the male present in the whole scene is the same one. From this video: ACP0003t11

great find! I will add a comment on Male04 description...such a trait helps a lot.
