sorry I couldn't wait as well and I had to walk a bit into the crimson-dew djungle. There I found this nice guy enjoying himself very much 😃

I'm thinking this is a match to Dodge whose face is also seen in ACP00053b1 but in different lighting and 4 months earlier?

I think in this video: ACP000564v you can see the similarity much better.

Ok, I think this is the complete list of what you found so far today that you think are Dodge:

    ACP000564z, ACP0005650, ACP0005651, ACP0005652, ACP000564v, ACP000564f, ACP0005643, ACP0005644

    Good work guys 😃

ACP000564a On 3-23-2014 at about 9:23 AM this seems to be quite a long sequence involving 2 cameras, Dodge, and some other chimps at or around this tree. Going backwards from @Boleyn's clip found this clip of Dodge doing a triple drumming run at this tree which I think is the 2nd camera's view of @Boleyn's find.

Here is a different view of the action shot!

ACP000564f 3-22-2014---9:41--- Is Dodge urinating on this tree the morning before the big display?

  • Snorticus by Snorticus

I made a chronological order list of this Dodge event by the tree so we could see how it unfolds. Last section needs other eyes to figure out if it is Dodge also.

ACP000564f 2014-03-22--- 9:41--- Dodge (odd?) posture by tree the morning before the drumming

ACP000564z 2014-03-23--- 9:21:46--- Dodge face close to camera looks around

ACP0005650 2014-03-23--- 9:22:01--- Dodge looks around, turns back, sits

ACP0005651 2014-03-23--- 9:22:16--- Dodge scratches back, armpit, shakes, stands up, looks at ground

ACP0005652 2014-03-23--- 9:22:31--- Dodge leans over, hoots, runs at tree, throws rock, hits tree, drums feet in 3 different spots on tree

ACP000564a 2014-03-23--- 2nd camera (time stamp 9:21 at beginning of the sequence)--- Dodge, same action as above, different camera

ACP000564v 2014-03-23--- 9:23:31--- Dodge standing by the tree looking left, brush rustling sounds, he goes behind tree

ACP000564w 2014-03-23--- 9:23:46--- Female walks in from left

ACP000564x 2014-03-23--- 9:24:01--- Female pauses, walks behind tree

ACP000564y 2014-03-23--- 9:24:16--- Wind blows trees, no chimps in sight, no chimp sounds

ACP000564n 2014-03-23--- 9:24:42--- Chimp sits in woods (Dodge?)

ACP000564o 2014-03-23--- 9:24::57--- Chimp still in woods, gets up, walks behind tree

    ACP000564p 2014-03-23--- 9:25:12--- Off camera hooting, drumming

    ACP000564q 2014-03-23--- 9:25:27--- New chimp arrives from left, M or F?

I don't think he is urinating, I think he is just resting. Chimps don't do a leg lift urination like dogs and I don't see anything coming our of his winky (winky is the scientific term in case you were wondering ;p ) ...

I can't see urine coming out of his winky (lol - scientific term) either. Now I'm wondering - do chimps ever mark things by urinating on them?

Your clip find made me want to find out the whole story, @Boleyn. That was some impressive chimp drama there!

    Hi @Snorticus,

in my opinion, the chimp in the last section ( ACP000564n and ACP000564o ) has two complete arms. Hard to see, but that's my impression. It is also scratching itself in a height were Dodge would not have an arm yet. About ACP000564q - I am not sure. I do not really see a swelling (all is dark at its butt), but it don't look really absent either. Maybe @PauDG can take a look later.

I agree that ACP000564n/o isn't Dodge. I was thinking ACP000564q might be Esme, whose rear has always looked completely deflated. (Perhaps she's post-reproductive?)

Nope, chimps do not scent mark as far as we know 😃

It is thought that female chimps do not reach menopause in the wild (although it has been reported in captive chimps) so we do not expect her not to have a swelling. It is possible though that the cameras only catch her when she is not tumescent.

Hm, I thought I remembered hearing a field researcher say that he has females who no longer cycle, but I must be mistaken. Thanks for the article!

I'm with you there @Snorticus 😃 and went looking myself a bit more. Here's what I found on 22nd and 23rd. Maybe you could add them to your list and format them properly? I'm having a bit an issue with this... Would be great, thanks a lot!

    ACP000565f 2014-03-22 09:40:53 Dodge? going behind tree

    ACP000565g 2014-03-22 09:41:08 Female from left

ACP000565h 2014-03-22 09:41:23 Dodge? humming, another one enters from left, maybe juvenile

ACP000565i 2014-03-22 09:41:38 Dodge? vocalizing, running against tree from left - cut!

unfortunately I couldn't find any more from this scene. maybe later...There might be two males involved, the first going behind the tree in video ACP000565f and the other one coming from left in video ACP000565i.

    ACP0005668 2014-03-22 12:41:44 female

    ACP0005669 2014-03-22 12:41:59 female walks away

    ACP000565v 2014-03-23 09:19:14 vocalizing, drumming (off camera)

    ACP000565w 2014-03-23 09:19:29 steps ?

    ACP000565y 2014-03-23 09:19:29 vocalizing

ACP0005643 2014-03-23 09.23.-- the known sequence (drumming) from other camera found by @AnLand

ACP0005644 2014-03-23 09.23.-- and Dodge walks behind tree

    Hi AnLand, and all!
ACP000564q too far, and only the back visible to know which chimp is, sorry.
And in ACP000564n and ACP000564o, I am pretty sure that this chimp has both arms, so we don't know who is, but not Dodge.
    Thanks a lot team!

Hi @PauDG, I did not do any matching proposal here. The question was only (at least for me) whether ACP000564q is male or female. What do you think?

  • PauDG by PauDG scientist, moderator

Hi AnLand, Is far but I will bet female.
There was someone else asking about if is Esme, and as she is very far, we can not be sure.
    Thanks!
