Female with infant at termite mound

  • AnLand by AnLand moderator

I did not find the videos and I am not sure who tagged them first. I had just one for classification.

I am not sure whether I want to go for a match proposal here, so I post it separately. In this sequence: ACP0006x2k, ACP0006x2l, ACP0006x2m, ACP0006x2n is an adult chimp (I think a female) with an infant at a termite mound. I want to note that her right ear has a nick mid ear as the one that we discussed with Tyra. I tried to get a look at her left ear, but I am not sure what I see there. At least other traits as baldness, long face and form of brows is consistent. Age of infant fits and - barely seen - the eye mask seems to be quite dark. Nothing else is seen and videos of them coming and leaving are not found yet.

    Best view on infant:

@Eswiniarski tagged it first -- if you hover over the "2 months" next to the comment on ACP0006x2n you can see it was a couple hours before my tags : )

At any rate, I had also noted it as maybe Tyra, but lost track of the video.

ACP00078rg This clip of Tyra looks to have the same flattened nose, protrusion above the top lip, and prominent brow ridge as the female in ACP0006x2l. As always with Dry Lake, details are hard to see well for me.

    ACP00078rg Preview of Tyra:

    Tyra and Toby

ACP0006x2l The lighting is much more contrasty, but as AnLand pointed out these faces look similar.

The female does bear a resemblance to Tyra, but I don't think it's her. No other guesses yet, though,

First, Tyra's description says she has a notch in her left ear, not her right. Was there a discussion somewhere about both her ears being damaged? Photos below are pretty clear.

    Tyra, right ear:

    Tyra, left ear:

This chimp has a notch in the right ear, and what looks like a more severe deformity in the left. Hard to see what is going on there, but it doesn't look like just a notch.

Also, Toby has a very pronounced dip in the center of the brow. The juvenile in this sequence has a straighter brow.

Yes, there was a discussion in the original Tyra thread whether her right ear is also nicked or bent. Here http://talk.chimpandsee.org/#/boards/BCP000000o/discussions/DCP0000h14 (page 5)

You can see it in my opinion also in this video ACP00078cf.

@ksigler: what do you see in her left ear? More damage than just a nick?

Thanks, @jwidness, I did not know this.

Ahh, thanks, @AnLand ! I had forgotten the details of that discussion. To me, this chimp's left ear looks wrinkled or shriveled. Maybe it's just the way the light reflects off of it and the poor view that makes her ears look worse than Tyra's. See photos below from ACP0006x2l:

I agree with you @ksigler, I think their right ears are very different. I see this last chimp´s left ear sort of swollen or inflamed...

    By the way, I assumed that she is a female because I think the infant is considerably small to be learning how to use tools with a male. I hope it´s fine for you :}

Of course, a swollen or inflamed ear might not be permanent. So, we might not see this trait again (or be able to compare her ear with other chimps when it is not swollen). I am not sure where the right ears are so much different, but I just cannot see them well.
