Chimp & See Talk

Adult male with long gait and large testicles

  • ksigler by ksigler moderator

Hope that subject line isn't offensive. This is an adult male with a short/squatty body, dark hair, a long gait, very large/swollen testicles, light patch on the butt, pinkish face, long chin, and ears that curve forward at the top. There is a possibility that this is (one of) the males discussed previously but unnamed. See end of post for that discussion.

    Proposed matching clips:

The first chimp to enter, with gait, pink face, curved ear, and rear seen in ACP00072ko:

    male

    male

Seen quickly in ACP0006lxr, but the testicles and curved ear are easy to see:

    male

Curved ear, gait (even considering the incline), and rear seen in ACP0007bt2 & ACP0007bt3:

    male

    male

    Maybes:

    • Based on the rear view only: ACP0006m97

    • Based on rear view, pink face, curved ear and gait (after he resumes walking toward the end): ACP00077qk

    • Based on rear view: ACP00072x2 and ACP00072xy (I grouped these because I think these 2 are very similar, and the 2nd clip was already discussed as a match for Notable Male 1 here )

I don't really have a problem with that collection. I'm looking into that since some time. My problem is that we have one sequence that shows two males whose dark back view, testicles, scruffy rear, the a bit lighter muzzle, and the straighter browline would fit that description. That is: DL11Male3 in ACP00064q5 and the first male in this sequence in ACP00064q2.

I don't think Male3 is the same as the one I was talking about. To me, Male3's back looks more scarred, and he has a wider light patch across his rear, smaller testicles, and a wider, lighter face.

However, I do agree that it's him in the second clip, ACP00064q2. I see the same rear, long gait, curved ear, and pink face.

Take a look at this sequence and tell me what you think: ACP00064nw ACP00064nx

I think both these males are in them.

The 2nd chimp seen in ACP00064nw looks like the one I wrote about (you can see the ears better in the video):
    male

And in the next clip, ACP00064nx, I think the male chimp following the mother that looks back at the camera looks like Male3, with his scarred back and rear and larger head.
    male3?

I think we have a new male here!

    to organize it a bit:

    match A

    ACP00072ko + ACP0006lxr + ACP0007bt2 & ACP0007bt3 + ACP0006m97 + ACP00077qk + ACP00072x2 + ACP00072xy + ACP00064q2 + ACP00064nw (second chimp)

    match B

    ACP00064nx + DL11Male3

I agree with the match A. He is quite distinctive, and I see him in the whole collection.

As for match B , Male3´s rear patch looks a bit wider to me...not 100% sure.

    Thanks @ksigler!!!

But can we guarantee that he is not also one of the others with a straight brow, like DL11Male11? Of course, we do not see a gait (because he is not walking), but the rear looks not so different, e.g. here ACP0006tdc and ACP0006tdm.

That's why, I am so cautious. And I think with these described traits, he might be DL11Male11 and DL11Male7 (here testicles seen from the front view in ACP0006vb8) as well. I am not sure what to do with DL11Male1. Not much is seen and we discussed his testicle situation already when we found him.

I looked at all the males on the prospective list, and there are some with a few similar features, but I didn't see any that had all the same features. For 11 and 7, the face coloring and the ears didn't match in my eyes. I'm open to more opinions, though.

One more clip that might be the same guy: ACP00072km It's hard to see much... It's interesting, we've seen females walk with a long stooped gait when carrying a young infant, and the testicles are so large, at a glance they can look like a low-hanging swelling. I think this is a male, though. And I think I see the pink face toward the end of the clip. The gait is obvious, though it also appears that this chimp is stopping to go to the bathroom, which may cause that posture? Not sure....

this one is hard to tell...the gait looks very similar, but to me it would be the only reason to suspect a match here. I can´t see his ear, face coloring or testicles 😦

No problem, I agree one variable trait like gait isn't enough to match on.

I have checked this long collection again, and this is what I think:

    MATCH A: ACP00072ko + ACP0006lxr + ACP0007bt2 + ACP0007bt3 + ACP00072x2 + ACP00072xy

But I have my doubts with: ACP0006m97, as it would only based on the gait, ACP00077qk, here I´m not sure that his gait is so distinctive, ACP00064q2, only rear and ACP00064nw, as the male here walks normally for my taste.

MATCH B: same as I said before, I see different rears here 😦

So we do have enough agreement about the clips in Match A to move forward?

I understand the doubts on the remaining clips. Wondering, are you thinking it's possible that any of them are matches with each other or another male, or are they still candidates for "Match A" but not enough evidence?

It would be great if you could name `your´ male: MATCH A: ACP00072ko + ACP0006lxr + ACP0007bt2 + ACP0007bt3 + ACP00072x2 + ACP00072xy as you were the one coming up with this suggestion.

As for the remaining clips, I would just exclude them from the match. We only see their rears, but I can put them together in the POTENTIAL MATCHES WITHOUT FACE VIEW list if you want to keep track of them. What do you think?

Sounds good. I don't know if we'll ever be able to match based on the rear view, but having them collected in one place to compare is a start. If it helps, these were the ones we weren't sure about.

For this male's name, I'd like to propose Thomas.
