How common are friendships between males or males and older juveniles and how do teenage males become part of the adult groups like e.g. Emery at RS?

Friendships between adult males are very common! The juvenile males start integrating slowly into the male hierarchy upon reaching adolescence (around 10 yrs). At that age they are usually targets of aggression by the older males (who ascertain their dominance) and provide much more grooming than they receive, so most of their social relationships are pretty much one sided (unless kinship is involved). However, as soon as they grow and become more "attractive" social partners or potential allies they receive more grooming and form coalitions with the older males, which is presumed to facilitate the bonding
