Male Chimpanzee with injured right hand

  • Rattus by Rattus

Male chimpanzee has to walk slowly and awkwardly on two feet and his left hand, impeding his progress. His right hand hangs limply from his arm and appears to be damaged. This means unfortunately that he will have to use his left hand for obtaining termites and other invertebrates. Without help from other friendly chimps, this individual could be vulnerable to attack from predators and rival chimps because he is physically disabled. Tree climbing for fruit will also now be more difficult for him. Not sure how the male chimp became injured or how painful it is for him to have to live with such an injury. It is sad to watch.

Hi @Rattus and welcome to chimpandsee.

You found Cassini, one of our well known chimps at Green-Snowflake. We have seen him over a period of at least nine months and he seems to do quite well. Although it's sad and certainly painful to have an injury like this, he's doing ok and he's also well accepted from the other males. As you can see he's also well fed. I also think he's still able to climb trees. I've seen other injured chimps climbing trees quite well. But of course it's very bad and sad that they have to cope with snare injurys at all. Many of our chimps here show some bigger oder minor impairments but luckily all are doing quite fine from what we can see here.
