Hi all,
this is a thread for us all to participate by sharing ele. videos showing interesting behaviours/traits etc. and where everyone is allowed to give an opinion on that. Any sort of explanation is allowed, even if you think itΒ΄s crazy...at the end I will give an expain it and you will realize that you might know elephants more than you could imagine.
so hereΒ΄s the first one:
Challenge #1 :
in this thread @Felpa would like to know what this guy might be doing with the back leg here:
what do you guys think? π

Hmm, not sure. At first I thought it was preparing to pee but then I think its leg goes too far back for that. Could it be trying to keep an elephant behind it at a distance? You did say even crazy suggestions were acceptable!!!

Yay, a challenge, great! π
You want crazy, you get crazy: It looks like stretching to me, but maybe she is trying to fell a tree? They don't seem to be very thick and it could work that way I think.

The camera view has been knocked to a diagonal. Is this elephant brushing the ground to explore it with the feet kind of like the front elephant here?

Here's another little ele challenge. I hope Nuria won't mind π
Simple question: what is it?

Hi, Nuria, what a surprise!
The first thing that came to mind was... that the elephant was very interested in showing something to someone.
Maybe just to the camera. I've been watching other videos and it seems that elephants sometimes feel annoyed with the cameras, maybe because they emit something. Of course it moves slowly, it does not seem angry like in the video of Batfan ACP000drn0.
Or maybe the elephant wanted to show his ass to a fellow. I would say that if so, it would be a challenging sign ... It does not seem like a sexual attraction behavior ... ‘‘ Or is it ??
On the other hand, diving on the Internet, it seemed to me that elephants do not satisfy their physiological needs like dogs, that is, they do not raise their hind legs for it.
About streching her leg as in yoga, well... now I see why elephants live so long, they keep away arthrossis....Nuria, I have not found the video of the same behavior from another perspective that you mention. But in this way I've reviewed lots of videos of hind legs and elephants asses π

This is fun! Good spot @Batfan! For the first video I'd have said it was a lovely and very impressive yoga pose too!

Yay !! That was a lucky guess! Thank you for the metaphorical back-slap - I shall collect on it later π Love the original video, it's not often you get such a personal view of an elephant .

Providing counterbalance? Is the elephant bending or reaching for something with its trunk?

Hey!!! sorry for the delay, here I go:
challenge #1:
@Batfan: the "distance theory" could make sense, but actually what I see is that this ele. is checking the camera with the foot. Elephants use their back legs to check interesting things (in this case it could be the camera), and also to kick (@Pugli can tell π ). Like cows, they can kick sideways.
@Boleyn, when eles. want to fell something they usually do it with their foreheads...
The camera view has been knocked to a diagonal. Is this elephant brushing the ground to explore it with the feet kind of like the front elephant here?
exactly π
Paula: LOL!!!!!!!!, sorry, no yoga here, but crazy answers are very much welcome!!
So the solution is: checking something interesting with back leg...in this case the camera.
