Baba--AVMale01c-Baba

Hi all,

what do we do with AVMale01c? We thought that could be Baba, and I still finding them veeeery similar.

What do you think?

No kidding! Really similar.

I think if you compare the 3rd photo on top from Baba and the middle photo on top line from AVMale01c, you can see that AVMale01c's left ear seems to stick out more from his head than Baba's.

Therefore, i think different chimps.

Looking at these again today I'm voting that they are the both Baba. The baldness on the head is not as apparent because of the angle of light I think, but he carries his head lower than his shoulders in the hunched way that Baba does. The brows are fairly straight with a slight dip in the middle. Round shape to the light muzzle which includes the nose. Lower lip protrudes slightly. Similar body shape & size.

Baba's baldness is so variable depending on the light. Later in the clip he turns his head up more and the thinning is visible. It's kinda confusing since it can disappear in some lighting & with some head positions. The ears are really nicely rounded with no damage and they also look different - bigger - when he looks up and then not so big when he holds his head down and we mainly see the top rims catching the light. Kinda confusing.

@puddock found this video ACP000efep two days ago and I thought this might be Baba. I see same baldness, straight brow, round high-set ears, protruding muzzle. I think the thing on his right wrist must be some debris.

I'd wondered the same thing @Boleyn - he's very distinctive isn't he? I found it hard to do a comparison between the black and white images and the colour ones but looking at the pics you've put up I'm convinced! The baldness and the lovely rounded ears seem very similar in both pics.

Paula, I think we can add AVMale08 also to the Baba collection. Although the clear shot is quite in the distance in this video ACP000fog2 we can see the light brown face and the ears sticking out. Size fits as well.

ACP000efkd and ACP000efkf are part of the known Baba sequence (ACP000efep etc.), I think.

It's quite a distance, but I think ACP000fylg and ACP000fylh is Baba. Dark, massive male with a light face.

I would agree with @AnLand this beeing Baba. The light and wide face is a good indicator for Baba as well as the straight thick browline and the high almost bald forehead.

Around sec 2 in ACP000fylh we can shortly see his backside.

His callousy cushion is also a little lighter as the ones of the other male chimps here at AV. When I compare it to the backside of Baba in this video ACP000ggj1 (the second one to look up into the sky around sec 10/11) or in this one with the intestine problems ACP000gfrc 😉 I can see the 2 light cushions slightly V-shaped.

Hi! I think in ACP000f0dm / ACP000f0dn / ACP000f0do we do see again Baba: big male with a light face, slightly rounded brows and some thin hair on the forehead. At least the right ear seems to be undamaged.

Again, no fixed opinion, but thinking aloud. If he is a grown male, he should be Baba, but his face looks really bright and I am not 100% sure that this chimp is fully grown. Do you think he is? And it's the sunlight that colors the face? It's irritating, but probably this is Baba. He looks much younger here.

I do think that Baba is quite young, that's the reason of his clear face and ears. True that here he looks a bit younger and more fluffy, but I think is the light. But if we are not sure, we don't have to close the match 😉
